Inside
Heating System
It is extremely important that all gas boilers are serviced once a year, so find out when your boiler was last seen, contact a registered installer to carry our a regular annual check.
Smoke Detectors
If you haven’t got one, you MUST invest in some now – they can save your life.
Make sure that these life saving devices are working properly by pressing the test button at least once a month. Most smoke detectors in new homes are mains powered, but if your alarm is battery operated check that the batteries work properly and always have spare batteries available.
Use a duster or gently run a vacuum cleaner nozzle over the alarm to keep it free of dust and grime.
Flues and Chimneys
If you have a gas fire ensure that the flue outlets on outside walls are not blacked or obstructed. If you have a fire which burns on solid fuel (wood or coal) arrange for the chimney to be swept at least once a year.
Carpets
Make sure that carpets and rugs are secure – particularly in areas of heavy use like doorways and stairs. If carpets are loose or frayed think about replacing them.
Doors
Check that they open and close smoothly as both heat and cold can affect them. Use a lubricant like WD40 if hinges are squeaky.
Woodwork
To keep it in good condition it may need a lick of paint or a coat of varnish.
Taps
Dripping taps are really easy to fix, you might just need to change the old washer inside for a new one.
Radiators
If they are cold at the top, but hot at the bottom then you probably have trapped air inside – this can be quickly fixed by releasing the value at the top a little and tightening back up when water starts to come out.
